Rickard Vijk – Guitar, Singing & Music Lessons
A Life Shaped by Music, Ear and Inspiration
My name is Rickard Vijk, and I come from Malmö, Sweden.
I like to describe myself as a Sunflower Child rather than a Dandelion Child — because it sounds a little brighter and more hopeful.
I grew up under less fortunate circumstances and had to learn to take care of myself from an early age. Music became an important part of my life, and it has stayed with me ever since.
My Musical Journey
When I was ten years old, my father gave me a harmonica. I quickly learned a simple melody, Oh! Susanna. The melody uses notes that can be played with both inhaling and exhaling, making it particularly easy for a beginner to learn.
My mother had a small organ and a travel guitar with steel strings and a hard protective case.
I was born in 1964, and when the film The Deer Hunter, starring Robert De Niro, came out, I became fascinated by the beautiful soundtrack, especially the guitar piece Cavatina. Whenever I heard it in the film or on the radio, I tried to work out the notes by ear on my mother's guitar.
And that is how my musical journey truly began.
I have been playing guitar ever since.
I play entirely by ear and do not use sheet music. The same applies to the harmonica. Today, I play a 48-note chromatic harmonica. Although I primarily play melodies, I can also improvise and find my way through virtually any melody by ear.
For me, music is about listening, feeling and expressing something that words alone cannot always communicate.
Music, Children and Inspiration
Before undertaking my Waldorf music teacher training, I worked for several years as a Waldorf after-school educator.
I remember sitting in the parks of southern Stockholm, Sweden, playing guitar and singing for the children every day.
One particular memory has stayed with me.
One of the children in my group was a girl named Liv, who played the violin exceptionally well. One day, I said to her mother:
"What a wonderful violinist your daughter is!"
Her mother looked at me and replied:
"That is thanks to you, Rickard. You inspired my daughter every day when she attended the Waldorf after-school programme."
That moment meant a great deal to me.
What a wonderful feeling it is to inspire another human being and help them open their eyes to the magical world of music!
I believe that music should be accessible to everyone. You do not need to read sheet music to experience the joy of playing an instrument. With patience, encouragement and a good ear, music can become a natural and rewarding part of everyday life.
Guitar, Singing and Music Lessons in Bulgaria
I am now living in Bulgaria and will be staying for at least one year, starting on 8 October 2026.
I offer friendly, personal music lessons for beginners and anyone who would like to develop their musical abilities.
My lessons include:
Guitar playing, taught by ear.
Singing and musical expression.
Learning melodies without reading sheet music.
Developing your musical ear and sense of rhythm.
Exploring improvisation and the joy of making music.
Please bring your own guitar.
Harmonica: Please bring your own harmonica. A standard blues harmonica in the key of C is suitable, or you can choose a chromatic harmonica in the key of C.
I have many years of practical musical experience and experience working with children. My approach is personal, encouraging and adapted to each student's individual abilities and interests.
Lessons can take place in your home or in my home.
